Our Story
Founded in 2000 by ninth-generation winemaker Dominique Portet, our Coldstream estate brings French heritage to the heart of the Yarra Valley. Today, his son Ben continues the tradition, crafting elegant wines from estate-grown fruit.
Visitors can explore the cellar door, enjoy seasonal French-inspired fare in the bistro, or relax by the pétanque pitch with a glass in hand. It’s a place to slow down, enjoy good wine, good food and take in everything the Yarra has to offer.
The Bistro
Seasonal dishes inspired by classic French cooking, designed to complement the wines grown just beyond the terrace.
Open Thursday to Sunday, it offers seating both indoors and out, with views across the vines. Whether it’s Cabernet with steak frites, Pinot Noir and duck, or Chardonnay with roast chicken, the idea is simple: good food, good wine, and good company.
It’s a relaxed spot with a nod to the French countryside. Santé and bon appétit.
The Wines
From bright, early-drinking styles to fine, long-lived reds, our wines reflect the season and the site. Each range has its own story, from the lively Fontaine to the expressive Single Vineyard wines, and the structured Réserve de Famille and André.
All are made by hand in small batches, guided by patience and place. Whether shared at the table or kept to age, every bottle carries the character of the Yarra Valley and the Portet family touch.
Experiences
There’s always something to enjoy at the estate, from a quiet tasting or long lunch to one of our seasonal celebrations. We host annual favourites such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Bastille Day, along with vintage launches and special food events featuring visiting chefs.
Private gatherings can also be tailored for any occasion, from small family lunches to larger corporate affairs. Whether it’s a leisurely meal in the bistro, a tour through the winery, or a glass of rosé on the terrace, every visit is a chance to slow down, celebrate and feel part of the story.
Our Vineyards
The Dominique Portet vineyards are the heart of the estate’s cool-climate wines.
Coldstream, planted in 2002 beside the winery, grows Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties in grey loam and alluvial soils. The lower elevation and gentle slopes create mild conditions that produce structured yet supple wines.
Gladysdale, established in 2020, sits further east at around 300 metres on deep red volcanic soils. The higher elevation and cooler nights bring freshness and lift to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, giving the wines their finely textured character.
Both sites are handpicked and carefully managed to highlight the individuality of each block. Every step, from vineyard to bottle, is about staying true to the fruit and the terroir it reflects.
